America's Boating Course in Kaneohe

Our next basic boating class Monday, March 5th 2012 is free to Kaneohe Yacht Club members.

Honolulu Sail and Power Squadron will begin their 12 hour course on Monday, March 5th and meets for three hours on four consecutive Monday evenings from 6- 9 pm at the Kaneohe Yacht Club, 44-503 Kaneohe Bay Drive  Kaneohe, HI 96744.  The boating course is open to anyone 16 years of age and older and you do not need to own a boat to take this course.  For anyone who is not a member of Kaneohe Yacht Club, the cost is $30.  Please call Ellis Abram, education officer, at 808-255-3373 for location information and to sign up.  You may also fill out this form to sign up for the class.

This course will teach the basics of safe boat operation and piloting, is recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard and has been approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.  The ABC Boating Safety Class also meets the State of Hawaii requirements as a certified boating safety course and is recognized by the Hawaii Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation.

Learn what you should know to operate a boat safely in the waters of Hawaii including:

 

  • The rules of the road

  • The various types of boats

  • Required safety equipment

  • Navigation aids

  • Lights and sounds

  • Anchoring

  • Communications afloat

  • Adverse conditions

  • Water sports safety

  • Trailering

  • Personal water craft safety

  • Knots and lines

An introduction to digital charts and GPS waypoint navigation, a key skill for boating on larger lakes and rivers and coastal waters will also be covered.
